Overview

Molybdenum is a refractory rare metal with a high melting point and ranks sixth in nature.
Molybdenum is a kind of silver-white metal, hard and tough, and with high thermal conductivity. At room temperature, it does not oxidize with the air. As a transition element, it is very easy to change its oxidation state, and the color of molybdenum ions will change with the change of oxidation state.
Molybdenum is an essential trace element for human body and animals and plants。
The average content of molybdenum in the earth’s crust is 0.00011%, the global reserves of molybdenum are about 11 million tons, and the proved reserves are about 19.4 million tons
Because of its advantages of high strength, high melting point, corrosion resistant and abrasion resistance, molybdenum is widely used in the fields of iron and steel, petrochemical, electrical and electronic technology, medicine and agriculture, etc.

Chemical property

Molybdenum is chemically stable and is stable in air or water at room or moderate temperatures.
Molybdenum does not react with HF, HCI, dilute HNO3, dilute H2SO4 and alkali solution at room temperature.
Molybdenum is dissolved only in concentrated HNO3, aqua regia or hot and concentrated H2SO4, boiled HCI.
The most important oxides of molybdenum are MoO3 and MoO2.
Pure MoO2 is dark gray or dark brown powder. MoO2 soluble in water, soluble in hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, but insoluble in ammonia and other lye. If continue to heat MoO2 in air, vapor or oxygen, it will be further oxidized until it completely forms MoO3.
MoO3 is a light green or pale blue white powder. MoO3 slightly dissolves in water to form molybdate acid.

Characteristics

Natural molybdenite MoS₂ is a soft black mineral similar in appearance to graphite.
Molybdenum-99 is one of the radioisotopes of molybdenum and is used in the preparation of Technetium -99 in hospitals. Technetium-99 is a radioisotope that can be used for visceral organ imaging in patients taking it.
Molybdenum is an important element in steel and alloys.
Molybdenum is an important component of the iris of the eye. When molybdenum is insufficient, the function of insulin regulation is affected, causing the osmotic pressure of ocular lens aqueous chamber to rise and the diopter to increase, leading to myopia.
Excess molybdenum is quite harmful to human life and health.

Application

For steel and alloys

The application of molybdenum in iron and steel industry occupies the first place, accounting for about 80% of the total consumption of molybdenum. Molybdenum is mainly used in the production of alloy steel, stainless steel, tool steel, high speed steel, cast iron and rolls.
The application of molybdenum in the chemical industry accounting for about 10%.
Molybdenum is also used in areas such as electrical and electronic technology, medicine and agriculture, accounting for about 10% of total consumption.

Molybdenum based alloys

The nonferrous alloys are made by adding other elements (such as titanium, zirconium, hafnium, tungsten and rare earth elements) to molybdenum as matrix. These alloying elements not only play a role in solution strengthening and low temperature plasticity of molybdenum alloys, but also can form a stable dispersive carbide phase, which can improve the strength and recrystallization temperature of the alloys.
Since it has excellent strength, mechanical stability, high ductility, molybdenum based alloys are used for making of high heat element, extrusion grinding tool, glass melting furnace electrode, jet coating, metal working tools and spacecraft parts, etc.

Chemical industry

The application of molybdenum in chemical industry is also expanding, such as lubricants, catalysts, pigments, organic polymers, flame retardants, smoke inhibitors, etc. For example, molybdenum disulfide lubricant is widely used in the lubrication of various kinds of machinery.

Electronic and eletrical field

Molybdenum has good conductivity and high temperature resistance, and the thermal expansion coefficient is close to that of glass. So it is widely used in the manufacture of spiral filament core, leads and hooks. In addition, molybdenum wire is also an ideal electrode wire for EDM machine tool, which can cut all kinds of steel and hard alloy. Its discharge machining is stable, can effectively improve the mold precision.
Molybdenum has the potential to replace graphene in the electronics industry.
One of the advantages of molybdenite over silicon and graphene is its smaller size. Molybdenum monolayers are two-dimensional, while silicon is a three-dimensional material. On a molybdenum film of 0.65 nanometers thick, the electrons move as easily as on a silicon film of two nanometers thick.
Because the monolayer molybdenite material exhibits good semiconductor properties, some of the properties exceed those of silicon, which is now widely used, and graphene, which is popular in research, and are expected to be the next generation of semiconductor materials.
