Alloy 41
Material
Alloy 41, UNS N07041, AISI 683, Rene 41, W.Nr. 2.4973, GH4141
Note: Rene 41 is trade mark of General Electric Inc.
Overview
Alloy 41 has exceptionally high strength at temperatures in the range of 1200 to 1800°F (649 to 982°C). The alloy is a precipitation-hardening type and strength is developed by various solution annealing and aging heat treatments. In the annealed condition, the alloy is ductile and has essentially the same forming characteristics as 18-8 stainless steel and other nickel-based alloys. It is stronger, however, and has a greater resistance to forming. The alloy has been formed with success on drop hammers, expanding mandrels and stretch former.
Application
Because of its high strength and good oxidation resistance, the alloy is being used in jet engine, gas turbine engine and high speed airframe components such as afterburner parts, turbine casings, wheels, buckets, bolts, fasteners and nozzle diaphragm partitions.

Workability
Hot Working
Alloy 41 is best forged between an initial furnace temperature of 2100℉ (1149℃) and an optical finishing temperature of 1850/1900℉ (1010/1038℃).
Cold Working
Alloy 41 work hardens rapidly; frequent anneals will be required. Aging after cold working can be result in strain age cracking. Cold worked sections must be heated rapidly through the aging temperature range, 1200/1700℉ (649/927℃), to the solution or annealing temperature to prevent strain age cracking. A sizable amount of cold reduction between anneals is mandatory. Small reductions, such as sizing passes, must be avoided.
